What to expect: The moderately priced Puerto De Luna is a restful, low-key hotel offering lush gardens, palm trees, tropical air, a pool, friendly hospitality, and an authentic Mexican ambience.

Amenity highlights: Centrally located in a courtyard among the hotel's six buildings, a large, free form pool surrounded by a spacious deck and furnished with wrought iron lounge chairs gets sun through most of the day.

Insider tip: A five-minute walk away is a shopping center containing a department store and a large supermarket that offers takeout meals as well as baked goods. Under the same roof are boutiques, caf�s, ice-cream shops, two takeout rotisserie spots, and a half-dozen beauty shops.

The Puerto De Luna consists of just 82 rooms and suites located in sand-colored buildings with white and terra cotta trim and black, wrought-iron balcony railings. Concrete sculptures are scattered within the resort's tropical grounds. Potted flowers grace balconies. For guests cooking their own meals, there's a small market within the resort. Guests have use of the front desk's safe-deposit box. Like most major Puerto Vallarta hotels, the Puerto De Luna purifies its water.
